Why Specializing Makes Your Business Easier to Choose

As I mentioned last week, I’m halfway around the world right now, staying with my daughter.

Her little neighborhood is adorable. Cafes and restaurants. Tiny markets. Flower stands.

And lighting stores.

So. Many. Lighting stores.

In a two block radius, there are probably a dozen of them. Chandeliers in the windows. Pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. Modern fixtures. Traditional fixtures.

Here’s the thing.

They all look exactly the same.

From the outside, I honestly can’t tell the difference.

And I keep thinking… how on earth does anyone choose?

When Everything Looks the Same, Referral Wins

If I lived here and needed a fixture, where would I go?

I’d probably ask a neighbor.

“Oh, go to that one. They’re so helpful.”
“Talk to Joe. He’ll spend time helping you get what’s just right.”
“They really care.”

Which tells me something important.

When you look like everyone else, relationship becomes the marketing.
Referral becomes the strategy.

And listen, that works. Relationship marketing is powerful. It’s how most of us, me included, built our businesses in the first place.

But on a walk this week, thinking about something my mentor Kasey Jones has been teaching me about growth and scaling, I started wondering…

What If One Store Chose a Clear Specialty?

What if one of those lighting stores only sold Murano glass from Italy?

What if another only did modern, sculptural pieces?

What if one specialized in lighting just for kids’ rooms?

You’d know instantly.

You’d either say, “That’s exactly what I need,” or “Nope, not for me.”

And that’s the point.

It’s Just Like This in Our Business

So many business owners are afraid to narrow their focus because they don’t want to miss out.

“If I only do this, I’ll lose all the people who want that.”

But what actually happens is the opposite.

When you specialize, you become easier to choose.

You repel the wrong fits.
You attract the right ones.
You stop blending into the row of glowing windows.

This is brand differentiation in real life.

And it doesn’t require hype. It requires clarity.

Why Website and Messaging Clarity Matters

Let’s be real.

If your website, your messaging, or your offers feel a little… same-ish… you’re not alone. I see this every day.

Smart, capable entrepreneurs who are incredible at what they do. They are truly bringing their gifts into the world.

From the outside though, it’s hard to tell what makes them different.

That’s where clarity changes everything.

You don’t need to burn it all down.
You don’t need a full brand overhaul.
You don’t need to get louder or flashier.

You just need to be specific.

Clear about what you want to be known for.
Clear about who you’re best for.
Clear about what you don’t do.

That’s when your business gets lighter. Easier. Easy-breezy, like a day at the beach.

How to Clarify Your Niche (A Simple Step)

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about your website, your blog, your social media, or your emails.

The goal is the same.

When someone lands there, they should think: “Oh. This is exactly what I need.”

Not: “Hmm. Looks nice… but so do ten other places.”

Take a quick look at your own storefront.

If someone walked by today, would they know what you’re truly known for?

Or would they need a neighbor to explain it?

Tiny step for this week - Write one sentence that starts with: “I am the go-to person for…”

Not for everything.
Just one thing.

That’s where “Shell, yes!” momentum starts.

And if you want help making your online home reflect that kind of clarity, I’m in your back pocket. If this makes you feel a little squirmy, I’m happy to do an audit of what you’ve got and help you see what’s working and what’s blending in.

Shell, yes. Here’s to your success.

Frequently Asked Questions About Specializing in Business

  • This is the biggest fear.

It feels like if you focus on one thing, you’ll lose all the other opportunities.

But specialization doesn’t shrink your business. It sharpens it.

When you’re clear about what you’re known for, the right people find you faster. They trust you quicker. They say yes sooner.

    Clarity creates momentum.

  • You still can.

Specializing doesn’t mean you stop being multi-talented. It means you choose one clear entry point.

Think of it as your “front window.”

Once people are inside your world, you can absolutely serve them in different ways. But from the outside, they need something simple to grab onto.

  • Start with this:

Where do you get the best results?
What do people already refer you for?
What feels easy-breezy for you but hard for others?

Often, the answer is right under your nose.

You don’t need to invent something new. You need to name what’s already working.

  • You don’t need to rebuild everything overnight.

    Start small.

    Clarify your homepage message.
    Tighten your headline.
Make your “I am the go-to person for…” sentence visible.

Tiny steps stack. A win is a win.

  • Yes.

Referrals are powerful. But when someone lands on your website, your messaging should confirm what they’ve heard.

    It should feel obvious.

    Clear beats clever.
    Specific beats broad.
    Simple wins.
